The Cause

Easter 2013-22Color PHor A Cure was founded by Josh & Lindsey Belt of Jennings, Louisiana. In January of 2013, their youngest son Joel Belt (3 years old) was diagnosed with severe primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH). After 42 days in 3 different hospitals, Joel was sent home with very aggressive medication with the hope to improve his quality of life. Since there is NO CAUSE found for why Joel has PPH, that also means there is NO CURE. He currently has only two options at the moment: medicine for life or a double lung transplant.

family

Today, Joel is currently being seen by some of the greatest PH doctors at Texas Children’s Hospital. He is currently on a 24/7 IV medication that is being infused directly into his heart as well as taking half a dozen other oral medications. Unfortunately, at this time no PH medication given to children is approved. Just recently, Joel’s doctors have given him 6 month to 1 year to live. This is where you can help! Joel needs your help in raising funds to find a cure in his lifetime.

WHAT IS PH?

Pulmonary hypertension (PH), a rare and often misdiagnosed disease. The disease causes high blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries. This makes it harder for the blood to flow through the lungs to pick up oxygen.  This causes potentially life threatening consequences such as right heart failure. When diagnosed in time, treatments can be administered that improve quality of life and may prolong it. While research has come incredibly far in the last 15 years or so, with nine approved PH therapies and many more in the pipeline, none of these therapies is approved for use in children.

Joel Belt100% of all the proceeds from the race will go to help raise awareness and research funds for PHA’s Dr. Robyn J. Barst Pediatric Research and Mentoring Fund for Pulmonary Hypertension. This is the only pediatric PH research fund in all of the United States. You can learn more about PH at phassociation.org

Our goal is to raise $40,000…so every dollar helps!

FAQ

HOW IT WORKS?

You start out as clean as a newborn babe, and throughout the run, you’ll be blasted with bright colors from our Color Bombers until your face, shirt, and body come out silkscreened like a tie-dyed hippy on the other side. Each section of the run adds a new explosion of color to your clean, painter’s palate until you cross the finish line looking like a pack of skittles.

I’VE NEVER RAN A 5K, WHAT DO I DO?

We want to help! In fact, this Beginner 5K Plan will transform you from a couch potato to 5K runner in just two months. Each session should take about 20 or 30 minutes, three times a week. Before setting out, make sure to precede each training session with a 5 minute warmup walk or jog. Be sure to stretch both before and after. Now, go lace up your running shoes and get to steppin!

Color PHor A Cure Beginner Plan

CAN THE COLOR HURT ME?

The color is super safe and is basically the consistency of powdered sugar. This is non-toxic, non-rash-inducing, colored cornstarch. Processed in the good ol’ US of A, these blasts of starch will change your color, and your demeanor, but never your level of wellness.

WILL THE COLOR RUIN MY SHOES OR CLOTHES?

The color does mostly wash out after the event, but some of it can stain. As with anything, the sooner you wash it the better. We suggest wearing items that you wouldn’t mind getting the color on. If you want to preserve the color in your shirt, spray it with vinegar and iron it before you wash it.

WHAT IS THE AGE LIMIT?

No age limit! Come young, come old!

ARE KIDS ALLOWED?

Yes, kids love to get colored just as much as the rest of us. Kids 7 and under are free with adult registration. Kids will not receive a shirt, but can purchase one on Race Day. Strollers and wheelchairs are welcome! We do recommend that your kids are properly protected with sunglasses, and for toddlers and infants, maybe even something to cover their mouth.

ARE PETS ALLOWED?

Nope, sorry. Our races are pet free.

WHAT DO I GET FOR REGISTERING?

Besides getting the most colorful experience of your life in this most amazing 5k, you’ll also receive a swag Color PHor A Cure 5K bag and shirt, race bib, color packet, and any promo material that local sponsors might include.

CAN I SIGN UP AS A TEAM?

Absolutely! Whether you have family, co-workers, workout buddies…you can sign up as a team, pick a team name and run the race together. Many teams make their own t-shirts with their team name or come in costume. You can register as a team at the Register part of this page.

WHAT IF I REGISTER AND CAN’T MAKE IT?

Can’t make it? Are you crazy?! You can’t afford to miss this!

WHAT IS THE REFUND POLICY?

Bummer, No. Unfortunately it’s impossible for us to offer refunds. You can still pick up your packet and race goodies, or you can transfer your registration to someone else up to 1 week prior to the event. In order to to transfer registrations, you need to send us the name, contact info, email, and shirt size of the person to whom the registration will be transferred to. We can then take care of the rest.

WHERE AND WHEN IS PACKET PICKUP?

Check out the race page two weeks before the race to download important race docs like, dates, times, and locations of packet pickup. When you come you’ll need your name, personal identification, and 2 hands…or three..heck just bring however many hands you have. We will make it work.

WHAT TIME DOES THE RACE BEGIN?

The race begins at 9AM, and then we’ll release waives every 5 minutes or so. We recommend getting there 45-60 minutes early so you have plenty of time to park and stretch!

CAN MY FAMILY WATCH?

Of course! Bring your friends and family to come cheer you on. Just be sure to give them a big hug at the finish line for coming to support you!

IS THE COLOR PHOR A CURE 5K TIMED?

No timing chips, but you will have the “time of your life”!

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE FINISH LINE?

This is the best color finale you have ever seen. Every 15 – 20 minutes everyone will grab their Color packs and pummel each other until you’re black and blue (from corn starch – no real bruising will occur). There will be music and other color doused participants welcoming you across the finish line with open arms.

HOW DO I GET CLEAN?

For sins: we’d recommend repentance and confession. For color: we’d recommend soap, cold water, and perseverance. After the party if you want to dust yourself off before going home, hit up one of our “blow” stations where we will do our best to blow you clean. You may want to bring a towel or plastic garbage bag to put in your car for the ride home.

CAN I TAKE PICTURES?

We will have photographers taking pictures during and after the 5k but if you want to get some sweet pics in the midst of all that color goodness, we recommend using a plastic baggy or plastic wrap to keep your devices color free.
